Inspired by Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay’s bestselling book How to Have Impossible Conversations, this Runnymede Forum on Civil Dialogue explores one of the defining civic challenges of our time: how to engage disagreement with curiosity, intellectual honesty, and mutual respect.

At a time when disagreement too often gives way to hostility, silence, or mutual distrust, this forum will examine the habits, techniques, and mindset that make productive conversations possible—even when consensus seems out of reach.

The panel will feature Frances Widdowson, whose work on Indigenous policy, residential schools, indigenization, and academic freedom has generated national debate; Mia Hughes, Director of Genspect Canada and Director of Policy and Research with Genspect International, whose work on gender medicine and transgender policy has informed discussions internationally; and Peter Boghossian, philosopher, bestselling author, and co-author of How to Have Impossible Conversations, whose work on critical thinking, free expression, and constructive dialogue has reached audiences around the world. The discussion will be moderated by Jim Heller, a Victoria lawyer and advocate for free expression and open dialogue.

Although each panellist is known for engaging some of today’s most contentious public questions, the purpose of this forum is not to relitigate those debates. Instead, the discussion will explore what those experiences can teach us about asking better questions, listening carefully, challenging ideas respectfully, and preserving dialogue when disagreements run deep.

The evening will conclude with an extended audience Q&A, providing attendees with an opportunity to engage directly with the panel. Attendees from across the ideological spectrum are encouraged to participate, and respectful disagreement is welcome.

General admission is $15. Current Runnymede Society members attend free.
